Add an invoice download to your Shopify Thank you page

Customers ask for invoices right after they pay. Add a download block to your Thank you page and they help themselves, in one minute of setup.

The most common invoice question a store gets is also the easiest one to prevent: "can you send me an invoice for this order?" It usually arrives a day or two after the purchase, when someone needs it for their expenses. You can answer it before it is asked by putting the invoice on the Thank you page.

Why customers ask in the first place

Three groups need an invoice almost every time. Business buyers need it to reclaim VAT. Employees need it for an expense claim. Freelancers need it for their own bookkeeping. For all three, an order confirmation is not enough, because it has no invoice number and no VAT details.

The moment they realise this is often right after paying, while they are still looking at the confirmation screen. That is the moment to hand them the document.

What the block does

Marketplace Invoice ships a checkout block called Invoice Download. It sits on the Thank you page, the page a customer sees straight after payment, and shows a button that downloads the invoice for that order as a PDF. It is the same invoice we attach to the order and email to the customer, so there is never a second version floating around.

Adding it takes a minute

The block is placed once, in the Shopify checkout editor. In your Shopify admin:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Open Checkout
  3. Click Customize on the checkout profile you use
  4. Switch to the Thank you page in the page selector at the top
  5. Click Add block and choose Invoice Download
  6. Drag it where you want it and click Save

That is the whole setup. If you do not see the block in the list, check that the app is installed on this store and reload the editor.

A note on checkout profiles

Shopify lets you keep more than one checkout profile, for example a draft next to the one that is live. The block has to go on the profile customers actually see, otherwise you will test a purchase and find nothing there. The live profile is marked as published in the profile list.

What the customer sees

After paying, the customer lands on the Thank you page with the usual order summary. Your block sits there with a short line of text and a download button. One click and the PDF is on their device, with your logo, your company details, the VAT breakdown and the invoice number.

Customers who close the page too quickly still get the invoice by email, so nobody misses out.

When the order is not paid yet

The invoice belongs to a paid order, so the block follows the payment. With a normal checkout and an immediate payment, the invoice is ready by the time the customer reads the page. With payment methods that confirm later, a bank transfer for example, the invoice is created the moment the money arrives and the customer receives it by email instead.

That is the right order of events. An invoice for money you have not received is a document you do not want in your numbering.

What it saves you

Every invoice a customer downloads is an email you do not have to answer. For a store doing a few hundred orders a month that adds up to hours over a quarter, and to a noticeably calmer inbox at the end of the month when expense claims are due.

It also looks organised. A customer who gets a proper invoice without asking assumes the rest of your operation runs the same way.

Check it in two minutes

After saving the block, place a test order in your own store and pay for it. Land on the Thank you page, click the download button and open the PDF. Look at three things: your company details in the header, the VAT breakdown at the bottom and the invoice number. If those are right, every customer from now on sees the same thing.

Refund the test order afterwards. You get a credit note for it, which is a good way to see that side of the flow as well.

Three routes to the same invoice

The download block works best next to the other two. Every paid order gets an invoice by email automatically. Every order in your admin has a Print action in the More actions menu, so your team can pull up the PDF while answering a question. The Thank you page block covers the customers who want it right now.
